Nicole Kidman discusses early career challenges, including height insecurity

In a recent Radio Times podcast, Kidman shared her struggles with height criticism during her early audition days.

Recalling the past, Kidman revealed, "I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall.’"

People used to comment, "How’s the air up there?" Now, she hears remarks like, "You’re so much taller than I thought," or men unsure about her heel height, as mentioned by the Days of Thunder actress.

On the red carpet, Kidman often receives high-heeled shoes, prompting her to joke, "Do they have a kitten heel? I’m going to be the tallest person – a giraffe!"

She even turned down a role in Annie once because she exceeded the 5ft 2-inch height limit.

Despite being initially rejected for the musical, Kidman appreciates the chance she got to audition after requesting it. Reflecting on the experience, she said, "I didn’t get the part. I didn’t even get a call back – but at least I got to sing four lines of a chorus."

Notably, Kidman went on to achieve significant success in her career, earning her first Oscar nomination in 2002 for Moulin Rouge! and winning her first Oscar in 2003 for The Hours. She also secured two Emmys for her role in HBO’s Big Little Lies in 2017.
